On 19 July 2021, the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud kick-started together with the Alliance for Processors and Semiconductor technologies.
Following the publication of the European Strategy for Data in 19 February 2020, the European Commission promoted the creation of the European Alliance to advance the development and implementation of the next generation edge and cloud technologies: a crucial step towards Europe’s digital transformation and technological sovereignty.
Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for a Europe fit for the Digital Age, said: “Cloud and edge technologies present a tremendous economic potential for citizens, businesses and public administrations, for example in terms of increased competitiveness and meeting industry-specific needs”.
From businesses to national authorities, academia, and users, a wide range of stakeholders will come together to ensure secure, low-carbon and interoperable cloud and edge technologies. Emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and 5G will benefit from the enhanced digital infrastructures, products, and services.
Role of the Alliance
The Alliance will focus on the following non-exclusive list of tasks:
- bringing relevant actors together to prepare and update horizontal and technology specific investment roadmaps on cloud and edge;
- providing recommendations to ensure the coherent integration of investments with those foreseen for the deployment of common European data spaces in relevant areas ;
- advising the Commission on requirements and standards for cloud services, including for public procurement.
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) will facilitate the work.
Organizations at work in shaping the future of the Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud agenda in Europe are invited to join!
